Why it matters

Washington Square sits near the eastern boundary of the original colonial city, close to the bluff and the old factoring district. It is one of Savannah's oldest public spaces and one of its least-changed: the square's scale and framing remain close to what the plan intended.

The square is close enough to River Street and the bluff stairs to work as a quieter pause between the waterfront and the northeast residential district. Named for George Washington, it carries the patriotic layer common to Savannah's colonial-era squares.

This close to the river, you can feel the city's original logic.
