Why it matters
Greene Square honors Nathanael Greene, the Revolutionary War general who was given a plantation near Savannah after the war. The square itself is modest and shaded, sitting near the eastern edge of the historic grid where foot traffic thins and the neighborhood reasserts itself.
The square is surrounded by modest antebellum houses and is close to the First African Baptist Church, one of the oldest Black congregations in America. This part of Savannah carries layers of history that the quieter squares preserve better than the busy ones.
Every square in Savannah is a room. Some rooms are for pausing.
