Why it matters

Calhoun Square is the southernmost square in Savannah's historic district, sitting just one block north of Forsyth Park. Named for Senator John C. Calhoun, it is framed by Whitefield United Methodist Church and a row of Victorian houses on its western edge.

The square marks the end of the Bull Street axis, where the formal civic grid releases into the park. Visitors walking south from Johnson Square down Bull Street arrive here feeling the city's logic: square after square, each one a room, until the final room opens into the lawn and live oaks of Forsyth.

At Calhoun Square, the grid exhales into the park.
