Why it matters

Monterey Square sits on the southern portion of Bull Street, framed by the Mercer Williams House — the 1860 Italianate mansion made famous by 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'. The square's centerpiece is a tall monument to Count Pulaski, erected in 1855.

The square has the formal elegance common to Bull Street's sequence, with substantial antebellum and Victorian houses on all sides. Walking south from here, the city's residential character deepens before opening into Forsyth Park.

Bull Street's squares get quieter and more residential as you walk south.
